Great Romances: Frank’n'Cyd

January 24th, 2008

In writing yesterday’s post about It’s Always Fair Weather and Cyd Charisse, I stumbled upon this funny and improbable image:

Like Fred & Ginger! It’s one of a bunch of disconcerting and/or humorous digital mash-ups. View more unlikely and strange couplings at this worth1000.com page.

I enjoyed reading what you had to say about “Fair Weather”, it being one of my many favorite musicals. Cyd Charisse is just beautiful. If you want to see her in an exceptional performance, watch “Meet Me in Las Vegas”, where she was the star along with Dan Dailey, another great dancer of the 50’s. I saw most of these lovely movies on the BIG screens in the downtown Chicago theatres. Just imagine that lovely face of Cyd’s on a big screen! I am happy to say that I believe she is still living, as is her husband Tony Martin. My mother was such a big fan of his, having seen him in the 30’s at the Chicago World’s Fair, and as a special birthday treat, I was able to take her to the Chez Paree to see him. Our table was about 6 feet from the performing stage, and I swear that Mom stopped breathing!

    Like your daily blogs, Paul!

Thanks for commenting, Mom, and I’m glad you like the blog. I wouldn’t be enjoying any musicals if it wasn’t for you.

I don’t know much of Charisse beyond “Rain,” and although I’ve liked her, she never knocked me out. Since “Fair Weather,” that’s changed. I’ll check out “Meet Me in Las Vegas,” though it doesn’t appear to be on DVD yet. I see she’s in “Brigadoon.” I’ll have to watch that again — it’s been a couple decades since I’ve seen it.

You’re right, she and Tony have been married 60 years! I just saw a photo of her, and she looks great, now in her mid-80s. Wow!
