Stop, Thief!
For some comps for a client, I had to use this pre-existing character in different poses for potential print ads. He’s angry at an ATM machine in the first. These were quick and pretty fun. Nice to draw a character in a different style, one I wouldn’t have come up with myself.

Very spy vs. spy looking character. What kind of client is it for? Very fun and animated look! It’s got to be a challenge to take someone else’s character and work with him, figure out how he’s supposed to move and look from differing angles.
We as viewers are used to seeing cartoons move naturally and not notice the mechanics of motion. I saw something in Wired Magazine a while back; someone had made skeletons of cartoon characters like Wile E. Coyote and Mickey. It’s amazing how we accept such a distorted anatomy.
It wasn’t hard at all, actually, and a cool change-up. The challenge would come with this character if one needed to draw him in something other than a profile. Not sure he works any other way. He does indeed evoke “Spy vs. Spy,” though I’m not even sure what type of creatures those violent little dudes were!
You’re right about animated characters needing to be flexible. For some great examples, check out this blog from John Kricfalusi of “Ren & Stimpy” fame:

Scroll down a bit, and you’ll find all kinds of crazy animated stills. He’s opinionated and picky about style, and obsessed in general, so there’s tons of info and insight there.
